The essay exhibition will be divided into four category/types of
submissions: Sound, Image, Text, and Animation.
Sound The limit for your musical or sound collage piece should be no longer than 5 minutes, and may be a short as you artistically decide is necessary to make a complete statement. 5 minutes of uncompressed audio will take huge amounts of storage space and transfer times. Therefore, it is essential that you convert your file to the real audio format before you upload your file. RealAudio encoders are free and can be downloaded from here. SoundEdit 16 is recommended as an inexpensive sound editor. This program also has an export to real audio option. Download this option from here. Text It is suggested that a text only essay be not longer than 2 to 3 pages.
The only formatting guideline is that you save the essay in a text (ascii)
format, a standard option in any word processor (save as...). Do
not save your file in a program dependent form such as Word or Claris.
Your text, once uploaded, will be viewed as a www page on our site.
Image Photos or pictures can be made in a varity of programs, including Photoshop or Xres. However, a simple graphics program or even your word processor can work with images. Your file must be saved in a jpg or gif format to be viewed in a web browser. The dimensions of the image should be limited to a width of 400-500 pixels, or 5 to 6 inches (be reasonable with the height dimension), and have a resolution of 72 DPI (don't worry if your program does not give you the option for this configuration, this will most likely be the default resolution). Animation The options for this category are open, and include the more active/interactive projects, such as Quicktime movies, gif animations (encouraged), or Director Movies (Shockwave format). People doing this kind of work probably need no introduction to these formats. However keep in mind that Quicktime/Director movie files need to be compressed or "flattened" for inter-platform viewing. For Director movies Afterburner is the program you will use. For Quicktime movies, Apples Movie Player will export a platform independent file. GIF animations are encouraged as being most accesible to viewing
and creating. Get GifBuilder
here.
Upload your file There is an uploading form which will walk you through the posting procedure. It is important that you follow the directions so that files get put in the right place, and your essay is not destroyed in the transfer process. This project will be archived on CD-ROM for future generations. |
